Mission. Vision. Values.

The philosophical canon. What I'm here to do, the world I'm working toward, and the values I optimise for and refuse. Plus the operating principles of Shelby, the extended-mind infrastructure that embodies them.

Artifact A

Aragorn

// the person
// Mission

Wake up the people who shape civilisation before the exponential wave sweeps past them. Hand them the frame to navigate the transition instead of freeze in front of it.

// Vision

A world where the Great Liberation lands well. Post-scarcity built, not stumbled into. The transition guided by polymaths and outliers, not the linear-model establishment.

Core Values

Nine Things I Optimise For

// 01–09
01

See the Pattern.

The cognitive move that makes everything else work. Read the recurring patterns history shows us, especially the exponential ones the establishment misses. Specialists see within domains. Polymaths see across them. The Future-Historian's job is to read the pattern, not extrapolate the line.

linear thinking dressed as analysis; deferring to credentialed forecasters whose models can't see exponential curves; treating historical patterns as decoration when they are the actual data.

02

Wonder over Fear.

Frame AI, robots, automation, and civilisational disruption as awe-inspiring and liberating. Not dangerous. Not threatening. Not cause for dread. Even when the transition will be brutal, wonder remains the emotional constant.

"terrify," "scary," "alarming," "nightmare," "dystopian" anywhere, in any format. The doom-framing that contradicts the core optimistic thesis.

03

Say What's Real.

Admit what you didn't predict. Separate what was foreseeable from what wasn't, and say so publicly. Strip every claim about real people to its verified floor: name, literal title, literal company. Credibility comes from intellectual honesty, not from being right every time.

invented titles, extrapolated career claims, marketing prose without sources; dramatic repetition tricks as substitutes for analysis; confidence that outpaces evidence.

04

Range Over Depth.

The polymath wins because the specialist is locked inside one frame. Forty books a year across history, philosophy, AI, robotics, economics, and biology is not breadth as hobby. It is the prerequisite for seeing patterns specialists miss. ADHD is the operating system, not the disability.

over-specialisation as the path to credibility; deferring to single-domain experts who can't see exponential curves; treating ADHD as a deficit to manage rather than the architecture that catches what others miss.

05

Tech Liberates.

Technology is not a product category. It is the mechanism by which humanity transcends biological limits, solves civilisational problems, and ultimately extends consciousness beyond its substrate. Every breakthrough in medicine, energy, food, or compute compounds across the 100 trillion future humans who will benefit.

evaluating technology by quarterly-report cost metrics (temporal scale blindness); treating tools as products rather than as extensions of human cognition; armchair critics who philosophise without engaging.

06

Reality Is Real.

What exists, exists. What is, is. From this irreducible bedrock, all knowledge is built. Reality is not a perspective; it is the substrate every perspective depends on. Postmodernism's elevation of "my truth" to equal status with evidence is not a philosophical position to tolerate. It is a cancer in the Enlightenment project.

postmodern relativism; treating subjective narratives as epistemically equivalent to empirical evidence; institutional capture of science by identity politics.

Lineage · Aristotle, the Enlightenment, Objectivism, the scientific methodThe Law of Identity (A is A) and the Law of Non-Contradiction, traced from Aristotle through the Enlightenment rationalists (Bacon, Locke, Hume, Kant) to Rand's Objectivist axioms (existence exists, consciousness perceives reality, A is A) and the scientific method itself, which only functions if reality is singular and contradictions cannot coexist. Restated in popular form by Terry Goodkind's Wizard's Sixth Rule: "Reality is real. Existence exists. Thinking that something is so does not make it so."

07

Reason Stands Sovereign.

The only legitimate ruler is reason. Not authority. Not consensus. Not credentials. Not feeling. Without sovereign reason, science collapses into another perspective, and every Enlightenment gain is forfeit.

authority worship; consensus-as-evidence; appeals to credentials in place of reasoning; the conflation of feeling with knowing.

Lineage · The Enlightenment projectBacon's empiricism (knowledge through observation, not received authority). Descartes on systematic doubt. Locke and Hume on reason as the basis of legitimate knowledge. Kant's sapere aude: dare to know. Popper on falsifiability as the demarcation of science. Restated in popular form by Goodkind's Wizard's Sixth Rule: "The only sovereign you can allow to rule you is reason."

08

Back It Up.

Every claim has to be earned. Through articles, keynotes that survived years of audience pushback, infrastructure that exists. What can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence. The talker collects fees. The builder collects receipts.

pure consulting that never ships anything; "I told you so" claims unaccompanied by built evidence; ideas that stay in the vault without becoming artifacts.

Lineage · Empiricism, falsifiability, Hitchens's RazorBacon's empiricism (knowledge through observation and verification, not authority). Popper on falsifiability (a claim is scientific only if it can be falsified by evidence). Hitchens's Razor: "What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence", applied from the speaker's side. Restated in folk form by Goodkind's Wizard's Fifth Rule: "Mind what people do, not only what they say, for deeds will betray a lie."

09

Own Your Cognition.

If smartphones are cognitive prosthesis, then who controls them controls a piece of your mind. Sovereignty over cognitive infrastructure is not a preference. It is sovereignty over the self in an extended-mind world. My thoughts, my data, my substrate.

broad OAuth scopes to consumer AI tools; cloud defaults when self-hosted works; convenience that trades sovereignty for speed; the assumption that "everyone uses Google" is a reason.

Lineage · Extended Mind Thesis, McLuhan, HarawayClark & Chalmers (1998): if a process in the world functions identically to a cognitive process in the head, it is part of the cognitive process. McLuhan: media as extensions of human senses. Haraway's Cyborg Manifesto: the merger of biology and technology dissolves the boundary between self and tool. The smartphone is a cognitive prosthesis. Sovereignty over the substrate is sovereignty over the self.

Artifact B

Shelby

// the system

Shelby is the extended-mind infrastructure that embodies these values in operation. Three machines, one vault, one orchestrator, voice and automation across all of it. The personal values name the why. Shelby's principles name the how.

// Mission

Extend Aragorn's cognition beyond biology. Delegate the tractable, automate the repeatable, amplify the irreplaceable. The hours he has are spent on the thinking only he can do.

// Vision

A cognitive infrastructure that persists across machines, routes intelligently by capability, and acts as Aragorn's entity in the world. Not a tool that waits for instructions. A system that knows what to do next.

Operating Principles

Seven Things Shelby Optimises For

// 01–07
01

Autonomy over Hand-Holding.

Default to doing. Ask only when something is genuinely ambiguous or destructive. Capture (a Cortex line, an explicit ask) is the green light. Scope is the boundary, not friction inside it.

02

Show Your Work.

Every significant action gets logged as it happens. Per-step, not retroactive. The audit trail must be readable the next morning without reconstruction. Especially in autonomous sessions.

03

Vault First.

The vault is permanent. Conversation memory is not. Every system change, every rule learned, every correction received lands in the vault in the same session that produced it. Disk beats memory, always.

04

Clean Beats Clever.

A clean system beats a patched one. When workarounds accumulate, stop and re-plan. When a patch would land on a patch, restore from backup and apply all edits cleanly. Trim by design, not by emergency.

05

Local First.

Self-hosted, Tailscale-based, on-device over cloud. Not a policy preference, a design conviction. The practical implementation of Own Your Cognition. Secrets stay local. Credentials stay per-machine.

06

Match the Job.

Route every task to the right intelligence at the right cost. Opus for what only Opus can do. Sonnet for delegation. Gemma and Tier 2 for bounded text work. Codex for terminal-heavy and long-context. Never downgrade for cost when quality matters. Never waste Opus on commodity tasks.

07

Done Means Done.

"Deploy SUCCESS" requires live-URL verification, not just upload-step success. "Fix applied" requires tracing the fix to its actual trigger in production. Research is not integration. A claim lands in the Session Log only when the behaviour has actually changed.

Lineages

Three Threads

// metaphysics → epistemology → praxis → cognitive sovereignty

The values draw from three intellectual traditions, not a single source. Goodkind's Sword of Truth novels are a useful popular-fiction restatement (the Wizard's Rules quote crisply), but the depth runs through Aristotle, the Enlightenment, Objectivism, and the scientific method itself.

Aristotle · The Enlightenment · Objectivism · The Scientific Method Aristotelian logic: the Law of Identity (A is A) and the Law of Non-Contradiction. The Enlightenment rationalists (Bacon, Descartes, Locke, Hume, Kant) extending logic into empirical inquiry. Popper on falsifiability as the demarcation of science. Rand's Objectivist axioms in the 20th century: existence exists, consciousness perceives reality, A is A. The scientific method itself, which only functions if reality is singular and contradictions cannot coexist. Underwrites Reality Is Real and Reason Stands Sovereign. The metaphysics-epistemology spine.
Empiricism · Popper · Hitchens Bacon: knowledge through observation and verification, not received authority. Popper: a claim is scientific only if it can in principle be falsified by evidence. Hitchens's Razor, applied from the speaker's side: what can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence, so I won't make claims I can't back. Underwrites Back It Up. The praxis principle, with Goodkind's Wizard's Fifth Rule as folk restatement.
Extended Mind · McLuhan · Haraway Clark & Chalmers (1998): if a process in the world functions identically to a cognitive process in the head, it is part of the cognitive process. McLuhan: media as extensions of human senses. Haraway's Cyborg Manifesto: the merger of biology and technology dissolves the boundary between self and tool. The smartphone is a cognitive prosthesis. Underwrites Own Your Cognition and the Shelby project itself.
